What is a fishing paddle board?

A fishing paddle board is a longboard that can be hard-bodied or inflatable paddleboard.
They are wide, stable, track well, and are designed to be easy to fish from with extra features like holders for your rods and storage areas for your equipment.
Who should buy a fishing paddle board?
If you love fishing, love a bit of exercise, and enjoy going fishing solo, a dedicated fishing SUP or paddle board is an awesome way to get to waters you can’t access from the shore.
They give you a high vantage point to see fish, have a stealthy approach, and are a lot of fun to use.
Why buy a fishing SUP?
Most fishing paddle boards come with extra features to make fishing easier.
They’re more stable, more durable, and you can even add little helpful things like anchor mounts.
Here’s a list of their advantages.
- Portable and can be taken to any fishing grounds you like
- Stable and durable to fish from
- Come with areas to store your fishing equipment
- You can add motors to some of them to cover a lot of ground
- The ability to add anchors so you can stay in a good spot
- Add mounts for your rods, coolers, and for leaning on
Best size paddle board for fishing
The best size comes down to your own personal preferences.
The longer and wider the board, the more it makes the paddle board stable and the more space it’ll have, but it’ll also be heavier to manage on the water.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend a minimum of 10 ft long and 32 inches wide for a balance of stability and maneuverability, and you can go up from there depending on your storage and stability needs.
The Best Paddle Boards Brands
In my experience, the best brands are either Bote, Drift, or South Bay Co.
But this is purely based on my experience, and there are a lot of brands out there that are also great.
These brands make durable boards that are designed towards fishing more than most others thanks to their mounting options and more.
RECOMMENDATION
If you’re looking to side with a particular brand, then pick Bote as they have the best fishing features and mounting options to add whatever fishing needs you have for your SUP.
Things to consider when buying a fishing SUP
Type
There are two types of SUP to choose from, hard-bodied or inflatable and each of them has its advantages
Inflatable
Inflatables are awesome for portability…
They are delivered in a handy bag, some of which are backpacks, so you can take them anywhere.
You can even check them in on a plane and fly them anywhere.
When pumped up, inflatables are solid and rigid, they are super hard, almost like a hard-bodied SUP.
Durability
The downside is that they are susceptible to punctures and aren’t as durable as a hard-bodied SUP, but they are made to handle abrasion too.
Inflatables are usually made with heavy PVC that is drop stitched and seam-sealed to handle abrasions and prevent punctures.
They are also tough enough to stop any fish spines or hooks from getting into them.
Air
The main disadvantage of inflatables is having to inflate and deflate them every time you use them.
But you can always leave them pumped up, and they are quite light to carry and are on average around 40 lbs.
Hard-Bodied
Hard-bodied SUPs are usually made from foam or epoxy.
They are tough, durable and you won’t have to worry about any punctures. You can also mount things to these with ease, as you’re not going to pop the board by putting a hole in them.
Portability
They are a lot less portable though, and you’ll need a roof rack to get them to places with your car.
But, once you get them to your fishing grounds, there is no need to pump them up.
NOTE
If you want a motorized SUP, it’ll most likely be hard-bodied in order to be strong enough to hold a motor.
Carrying Capacity

Every SUP comes with its own carrying capacity which you should take note of.
Their capacities range from 200-500lbs and you need to think about your weight, the weight of your equipment, plus the weight of the fish you plan on taking home when you’re looking for the right one.
We touched on this in the ‘Types’ section, burn it’s worth looking at again. Portability is one of the best things about owning a SUP.
Weight & Portability
You should be able to load it up and take it to wherever you want to fish.
Destination
The key is to think about where those places are.
Do you want to fly to the flats in the Bahamas and paddle around looking for bonefish? Or maybe you want to take them to a mountain lake you need to hike to?
SUP’s can come in a backpack that you can carry anywhere, even up a mountain.
Others, you’ll always need a car to get from A to B and won’t be allowed on a plane
TIP
Be sure to check the SUP you go for will make it to the places you want to fish.
Weight
You should also check the weight of the SUP as you’re going to be carrying it around.
Some weigh 40lbs others weigh over 100lbs, and if you’re not going to manage taking it up a mountain if it’s 100lbs.
Features
There are a load of handy features available to make fishing from a SUP easier.
You might need all of them, you might want just a few, but they are all useful.
Rod Holders
Having holders for your rods, a place to put your tackle, tie-downs for lashing your cooler, and a place to put your paddle while you fish are all important things to have.
These features make you more organized and able to switch quickly from paddling to casting at a fish with ease.
RECOMMENDATION
The other fishing board features I’d recommend is some kind of anchor mount so you can park in one spot and fish, and the ability to mount a lean bar to help you be safe and stable while catching fish.
Stability

SUPs aren’t so stable in general, they are just boards at the end of the day. Now, imagine fishing from one.
You have paddled to a good spot, you see some fish and now you have to stow your paddle out the way, pick up your rod, cast, hook and land a fish all while balancing on the board.
It’s not so easy, and some extra stability goes a long way in helping you stay on the board.
To keep yourself safe, you should always wear a personal floatation device. If you don’t have one, click here.
Width
Look for the best fishing SUPs with some extra width (33 inches and above) and ones that you can add a leaning bar too.
Another good idea to assist with stability is having a cooler lashed on board what you can sit on.
In order to do this, you’ll want to ensure you have some D-rings or tie-downs to strap your cooler down with securely.
Summing Up
Thanks for reading my reviews on paddle boards for fishing.
They are a great product for stealthily stalking fish in the shallows and getting access to water you can’t wade to.
But, as you can see, they vary a lot from SUP/Kayak combos to ones that will hold an engine and others that are more simple.
I hope you have managed to find the right SUP for you from the reviews, but if you haven’t, here are my top two.
